We are going to see Dr. S on June 21 and I have a few questions for those who have already been to see him. Did you fly in and if so what airport did you come in to? Did you rent a car? Is there anything for kids to do there and will Ryan even feel up to doing anything? Thank you so much!

April 11, 2010 at 2:00 am #345002sjessParticipantHi Sue,
The closest major airport to Ida Grove would be in Omaha, Nebraska. There is very little to do in Ida Grove. It is a small town with some small shops on the main drag. I have not stayed in Ida Grove, so I can't answer whether there is more to do than that. Perhaps someone who has stayed there would know of things to do. The Super 8 motel there in Ida Grove has WiFi, which would give him high speed internet.
Hope that is somewhat helpful. Hopefully someone will chime in who has more information than that.
I hope you and Ryan have a good trip to Iowa. Please contact me if I can help you further.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing for kids to do. Unless you bring a small monitor with you, he won't be able to play video games. Pack a lot of PC games. Those hand held games are helpful. I would bring a laptop.
Safe trip to Ida Grove.

We flew into Des Moines and rented a car, it's still about a 100 mile drive on 2-lane roads. Ida Grove is tiny, about 2000 people, so very little to do, but the people couldn't be nicer. There is a bowling alley (with good food) and a skating rink, as well as a rec center that we found out after the fact. Ryan might find that helps pass the time. There are TVs in the IV room at the hospital. When I was there it was too cold to walk outside which I would have enjoyed to help metabolize the meds, but there are nice walking paths around the park if weather permits.
I didn't feel bad during the week of IVs, just very fatigued so I was happy to nap between the two daily treatments, the herxing hit after I got home. Tell Ryan to expect the strong metallic taste…..yuck!
Take care……kim

Sue,
Any certain type of site you and/or Ryan would be interested in? How much time would you have? Just off the top of my head, if you fly into Omaha there is a very nice zoo there and a big amusement park (the name escapes me right now–will get it for you if you are interested). There is also a dog racing track/Casino and lots of shopping.
April 11, 2010 at 3:59 pm #345011JBJBJBParticipantDoes Ryan play golf? There is a small golf course next to the hospital and Super8.
The IV has to be 6 hours apart. The hospital is open 24 hours, so you could get his IV started at 8:00 AM and drive to the places you want to go, come back to get the IV later in the evening.
He may just sleep the whole time. The Clindy IV could make people tired out.
April 11, 2010 at 4:47 pm #345012luvmywonderfulkidsParticipantOnly if it is miniature golf! As far as bowling goes, because of his hands, he can not hold a bowling ball. We will definitely bring our laptops and he can play games — he will be in heaven doing that! Thank goodness for wifi!
I can't believe how expensive the flights are!
April 11, 2010 at 4:58 pm #345013JBJBJBParticipantCheck out on Southwest Airlines. Sometimes they have a better deal. http://www.southwest.com/?int=GNAVHOMELOGO
I limited my son's video games for only 3 hours on the weekend. He'd love to go to Ida Grove to do IV in Ryan's place to trade longer hours playing electronic games. Hahaha….. yeas, I know what you are talking about. It's a treat for Ryan.
No, it's a full outdoor course.

April 12, 2010 at 5:23 pm #345015PetRescueParticipantHi Sue-
I am going to see Dr.S in two weeks. Is there anything I can check out for you? It's good to have the experience of everyone so I know what to expect. I can't wait to go roller skating with my son-it's hard to find skating rinks anymore! We are going to stay at the Motel 8-so I can let you know how that goes. We are also going to stop in Des Moines and go to Adventureland. It's on our way, but I can let you know how it is if you'd like. I can't wait to see Dr. S-I'm sure you're excited too!~jen
