Innovative technologies may soon make biofilms a thing of the past. One of the problems in treating the microbial cause of rheumatic diseases is the ability of microbes to hide within a sticky matrix, called biofilm. This necessitates chronic, long-term treatment of persistent infections. This article only discusses biofilm nanotechnology for dental biofilm (plaque) but imagine future implications for eradicating all kinds of health issues where biofilm causes chronic disease: bladder and gut infections, heart disease, throat and lung infections, ear and sinus infections, joint and other tissue infections. Perhaps finding ways to target these nanotechnologies without wiping out healthy microbiomes will be the biggest challenge!
