I wonder how long he had been treated for Lyme. Is the “accepted” treatment for pets also just a short dose of antibiotics?
February 17, 2009 at 7:37 pm #325674SuzanneParticipantAccording to this, he was on Xanax, too:

I don't know how long a course animals receive, but I have seen people post that when their vet found a tick on their dog, they automatically rx'd abx – just like that, no questions asked. I guess it depends on where you live.

February 17, 2009 at 8:41 pm #325675Joe MParticipantThis is one of the stranger stories I've read in a long time! A chimp that seems almost human, even logging onto a computer to look at pictures! But like the tiger in Vegas, a wild animal is still a wild animal and can be very unpredictable. A good lesson for all you chimp owners out there 😀
February 18, 2009 at 2:30 am #325676MazKeymasterLots of discussion re: this article on my Lyme support group. Here is an article from CT Eye Witness News quoting one of the renowned pediatric Lyme Literate physicians, Dr. C. R.-J. on his take of this attack:
Questions Remain After Brutal Chimp Attack
http://www.wfsb.com/news/18726175/detail.html
“Dr. C. R.-J. (physician's name edited), a Lyme disease specialist in New Haven, sees patients from across the country.
Dr. C. R.-J. said common behaviors of the disease are psychosis and rage.
“Sometimes they have to be on psychotropic medication to control it, then they have to come off,” he said. “”We've had several children who've had such bizarre and violent reactions that they've had to be hospitalized in a psychiatric unit.”
Dr. C. R.-J. said he has also seen family pets with the disease act out.
“I have had kids here who have had pet dogs and cats with behavioral changes from Lyme disease,” Dr C. R.-J. said. “It's usually not just irritability, but rages and depression.”
According to this article, the Xanax was given in an attempt to calm the animal who had been acting agitated all day. The attacked friend was visiting with a toy to try to help calm the animal. Pretty detailed account here and interesting that they actually interviewed a real LLMD in this instance. Different reports – different angles, I guess.Peace, Maz
February 18, 2009 at 12:50 pm #325677KimParticipantHow ironic is it that the story of a crazed chimpanzee finally gets Lyme on the front page?
February 18, 2009 at 7:29 pm #325678Jan LucindaParticipantFox News covered the attack but did not mention that the chimp had Lyme disease.
February 18, 2009 at 10:11 pm #325679KimParticipantThe Today Show mentioned it this morning.
February 21, 2009 at 7:35 pm #325680Jan LucindaParticipantMaybe someone should tell Fox News if they are not aware.
February 21, 2009 at 8:14 pm #325681Joe MParticipantThis chimp story keeps getting stranger and stranger. I'm reading that the chimp bathed with the owner, combed the owner's hair, and shared a bed with her. Can't wait to hear what comes out next.
Anyway, Forbes Magazine had this short article:
The Chimp Attack Lyme Disease Connection
The Connecticut chimp attack (listen to the graphic 911 call here) has been a big news story all week. One angle that didn't make that much sense was that the chimpanzee was supposedly being treated for Lyme Disease. Forbes has written about the over-diagnosis of Lyme Disease in humans. We'd like to know: Can an ape get Lyme Disease? Could the chimp's owner have been giving him medicine that contributed to the attack? The article Forbes refers to regarding over-diagnosis is here:
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2007/0312/096.html
In my opinion it is a well-balanced article because it probably upsets both sides. It mentions some LLMD's, Igenex, the Lyme associations, etc.
February 21, 2009 at 8:27 pm #325682Jan LucindaParticipantIf Forbes has the news of the chimp having Lyme, you would think Fox News would have it too.
February 21, 2009 at 9:16 pm #325683Joe MParticipantMaybe Fox didn't have it because the chimp was a democrat 😀

Comments to the med board of one of the LLMD's mentioned in the article (made before article was written, but addresses some of the statements made in the article – ex. the 'state of the art' clinic was also to treat HIV patients):

February 22, 2009 at 11:54 pm #325686Susan LymeRAParticipantI read the Forbes article looking for something about chimps ability to contract lyme. Not there, so wondering why that article is printed here.
I've never owned a chimp so can't say for sure but I have owned dogs and horses and they absolutely can contract lyme disease. What's more, vets don't fight about it.
