Oh well, I hate to burden you guys with this topic, but I have been having laryngitis for over a month now. I have been having hoarse voice on and off due to post nasal drip which triggers cough. I also have acid reflux which could also give me hoarse voice. Now I can hardly talk these days.

I did something really stupid three weeks ago… my friend gave me a small bottle of 35% of Food Grade hydrogen peroxide. He said I could inhale it (using a mist spray bottle). Since I had a very severe cough due to the post nasal drip, I sprayed it to my nostrils to give it a try. It really burned…. caused me sneeze like crazy. I sprayed it twice a day for about a week… I have minor nose bleeding. HOWEVER, my post nasal drip is dramatically reduced. I also applied triple antibiotics—Neosporin to my nostrils to keep it moisture. Consequently my cough is also very minimum now. Perhaps few times in every hour (before this it was three or four times in a minute)…. However the phlegm is very thick now.

I called my friend, he was shocked to hear what I did. He was like, OMG, did you really do that without diluting it? OMG, you should have not done that!!!

Oh well, I sure hope this stupid act won't cause any damage to my nostrils and my vocal cord….. now I am worried.

You can tell how desperate I was. Hopefully this nasty post nasal drip never comes back!!!

    JB,

Change in the voice was one of my husband's initial symptoms.  The pulmonologist took a look at the voice box during the bronchoscopy but didn't find anything significiant.  Treatment of the Lyme/Babesia has brought it back to almost normal.  I can't help thinking that so many of your symptoms are similar to my husband's.

    Parisa,

I am really glad to hear his Laryngitis is better.  Last night I searched google, some patients with Lyme disease also have Laryngitis. If I remembered correctly, “mom of 3” has this problem. Hopefully she is over with it. It seems I was still progressing to the worst prior to my Missouri trip. I hope this medicine can take care of it.

Thank you for giving me the hope.

JB-  I also have a very hoarse sounding voice lately.  Dr. S told me that the connective tissue in the throat can become inflamed and cause this.  Everyone keeps asking me if I have a cold or laryngitis or something.  I don't…..just have high inflammation levels in my body and it seems to be affecting my voice along with every other joint in my body.  The other thing I've noticed is that I've lost my range of voice and can no longer sing.  Its very odd!

    Fran,

I am so sorry to hear you lost your range of voice. That's so sad. I hope you will get it back as your inflammation level gets under the control. It must be really devastating as a singer.

Every one also asks me if I have cold. I have to cancel some presentations because I can hardly talk. This disease really steals a lot of joy of us.

Hopefully this will be short lived.

I did have this problem a couple of months ago. However, it is resolved now and I am talking normally again. Are you taking anything at all for your reflux?

Actually I have not taken any anti-acid med for a long time. I get worse on these medicine. Glad your laryngitis got better. Good to hear this. JB

    Roz,

Thanks for the gentle reminder. Food Grade hydrogen peroxide is very different from regular hydrogen peroxide. But it is still pretty dangerous and controversial. If you google it, you will find there are some good articles about it. I am going to stay away from it.

    Hi JB,

I've had a croaky voice for about the past year. At first I thought it was spring allergies and treated it that way. Then after 6 months I went to my AP doc who said it could be sinus infections or a vocal chord nodule. We treated for sinus infection and I didn't have any improvement.

Finally after about 9 months with no improvement I went to an ENT who is a voice disorder specialist. He put a camera down my throat and we watched my vocal folds in action. That was pretty amazing. Turns out I had vocal nodules and they said the tissue was striated – had some streaks of red probably from the days when I was very swollen and couldn't move. It turned out part of the cause was acid reflux that I didn't know I had. So I put the head of my bed up 2 1/2 inches and take an acid blocker twice a day. I needed voice therapy which has been very helpful for me as well. The ENT said that our voices are affected by things internally as well as externally – I also noticed that air quality affects my voice.

Now my voice is much better and I'm still finishing up the voice therapy.
