I thought that I had felt the aches and pains of herxing in every joint possible.  But now I have pain in a new place.  For the last couple of days I have had a terrible deep ache in my hip.  Back in the early stages of my RA when more and more joints were getting involved, I did not ever have any flare ups in my hips.  That said, I am surprised now to have so much achy pain there now.

Is it possible to be herxing in a joint that I don't believe was ever involved in the active flaring stage of my RA?

Thanks for any advise you all have.

I think so.  I don't have back problems; however, when I was started on multiple antibiotics, my back was in agony.  Back hasn't hurt since off the meds.

    Take care,

Lyme/RA; AP 4/2008 off and on to 3/2010; past use of quinolones may be the cause of my current problems, (including wheelchair use); all supplements (which can aggravate the condition) were discontinued on 10/14/2012. Am now treating for the homozygous MTHFR 1298 mutation. Off of all pain meds since Spring '14 (was on them for years--doctor is amazed--me too). Back on pain med 1/2017. Reinfected? Frozen shoulder?

Starla, it is very common to experience pain in joints that were not involved before. In fact, that can be one way to distinguish a herx from a flare. I also have experienced a deep ache in the hip region and, occasionally, in what seemed like the pubic bone (which was referred pain from the hip I was told). However, I note that you have been on mino for a year now. Have you been herxing all this time? If no and if this is a sudden new symptom, then it's probably worth checking out. Do you have an AP doc? Lynnie

    Hi Lynnie,
Over the last year I have herxed in many different places, but it always seemed to coincide with a location that has previously flared.  During the first few months of AP there were times that I felt like I had been run over by a bus.  As time has gone on my herxing has become more mild.  That is why this hip pain has taken me by such surprise.  I have my first apt with Dr. F in Riverside next week, which is lucky timing.  I look forward to hearing what he has to say about it.

    Hi Starla,

Only a passing thought, but as an alternative suggestion…is it possible the hip pain is related to sciatica? I had a run-in with that when I was at my worst. Not pleasant! Deep boring pain in the buttock area that radiated down the back of my thigh. There are varying presentations and degrees of sciatica, though. Hurt most when I stood up from sitting, but also difficult to get comfy in bed sometimes. It was 'fairly' short-lived and passed after about 6 weeks.

    Peace, Maz

    Hi Starla,

Perhaps a x-ray is in order? I had a similar experience, a x-ray showed damage which they called osteoarthritis.

You can read of my experience in my sig. line below.

    Good morning all,
Maz – I also wondered if it was some sort of sciatica problem, so Tuesday afternoon I went to see my Chiropractor for an adjustment. He did not find anything out of wack in my lower back that would cause a pain to radiate down.

Fortunately I am pleased to report that I the pain is very much diminished today. That makes me think it was very likely a herx in a new place.

Starla, that's good news that the pain has passed! 😀 If it's short-lived then it's likely a herx. The only way I could distinguish herxes from flares was in retrospect….herxes are short-lived and you feel better after they're gone and flares last longer and usually go hand in hand with worsening and progression.

    Glad you're feeling better!

    Peace, Maz
