    Hi Trudi,
What I realized a few years ago was that the brand of microwave popcorn I was using must have had some addictive ingredient in it. When I switched back to eating “home-made” popcorn with my own olive oil or coconut oil, I lost that “addictive” urge for popcorn. Now I just enjoy it periodically; and most especially with a good movie! 😛 But, with that microwave bagged brand, I HAD to have some every night. I am smiling to know that there is something healthy in popcorn like the oxalic acid you mentioned. Nice!!!

I had some ACT II popcorn which was good. A few years ago I got some popcorn at a Farmer’s Market with great seasoning that was really delicious. Popcorn can be good as well as healthy.

I also make my popcorn on top of the stove with coconut oil. The taste is fantastic. We actually got rid of our microwave when we remodeled our kitchen in 2005–don’t miss it a bit :).
    Take care,
    Trudi

Lyme/RA; AP 4/2008 off and on to 3/2010; past use of quinolones may be the cause of my current problems, (including wheelchair use); all supplements (which can aggravate the condition) were discontinued on 10/14/2012. Am now treating for the homozygous MTHFR 1298 mutation. Off of all pain meds since Spring '14 (was on them for years--doctor is amazed--me too). Back on pain med 1/2017. Reinfected? Frozen shoulder?

Jan, thanks for the snack idea. Unfortunately too often I crave popcorn for a snack. 😉 But sometimes apples with almond butter will do………….

    Michele, Jan, All…

Some ideas concerning some foods and other addictive substances we can/may become addicted to can be found in the links below. These links were found from a couple of searches done. Have been following the work of Dr. RB, neurologist, for several years now. It has been helpful to hear and read comments from him on this subject. I believe he was also interviewed on one or more of the hour-long interviews during several years (archived and we can listen to) I occasionally refer to on

    A Friend and All-

I’ve lost interest in popcorn. Don’t like the kernels stuck in my teeth. Back to apples.

Jan, I’d read in your previous post that you had “switched” snacks, but I posted the links about some of the reasons many of us may decide we love a certain food and crave it over and over again for those who may not have read/heard about this. Your post triggered my memory of a number of things I’d heard and read about manufacturers putting substances in their products, even some soups, etc., that do the same things… make us crave them. Those excitotoxins, I understand, are doing damage to a lot of people.

One of those links in the list posted also explains the reason why some try a certain substance (known to be additive, such as illegal drugs, but think addiction won’t happen to them), but the effect of it PLUS the “primitive brain” part of their brain system “remembers” and begins to crave a repeat of the effects of that substance. I found this facinating … as this apparently happens over and over throughout out our country (and others) to many, especially the young. In one of the radio programs I used to routinely record each Saturday as a program tool, featured a long-time health professional in the field of addiction recovery, and she stated that a sugar addiction was comparable to a cocaine addiction in some aspects, especially the difficulty to resist them. (Scary, isn’t that?) And, she said, it’s that “primitive brain” that remembers the feeling and will go to great lengths to repeat the effect.

    A Friend-

I do remember reading that cigarette companies put addictive substances in cigarettes to make them more addictive. I wasn’t that aware of food but it could be true. I try for food as natural as possible.
