I'm thinking of finding a new AP doc and heard that Dr. W was one of the most experienced (trained with Dr. Brown)..
Just wondering if anyone here currently goes to him and if you could share your experiences with him.
Thanks,
Tom

I go to Dr. W in New Jersey.
Wow.. he trained w/ Doctor Brown?? Well, tickle my ivories, I didnt know that! this makes me very, very happy!!
I saw him for the 1st time in late July.. started AP on July 31… Saw him for the 2nd time Sept 21st, he upped my Minocin from 50 mg, once a day, M-W-F to 50 mg TWICE a day, M-W-F…
So far, so good!
The medical complex where hsi office is is nothing short of WONDERFUL.. you can get all of your medical needs addressed under one roof: they have every kind of doctor / specialist there you can imagine.. their own pharmacy, their own lab.. if you need X-rays, MRI's, Ultrasounds, ANY kind of test.. they do it all under one roof.
In any case, feel free to PM me if you need more info. 🙂

Don't quote me on that (the Dr. Brown part).. I'm pretty sure I read that but I'm not 100%..
I am around 6 hours away from him so it wouldn't be an easy trip.
Do you know:
1. What is his standard AP treatment? Is it Minocin M-W-F Bid?
2. Being I am over 6 hours away.. Does he work with you knowing it's far away? IE: Over the phone appts, tweak protocol w/out seeing you, order blood tests and review them via fax, etc?
3. I understand he is a rheumy as well? Does he try to push the standard meds?
4. Does he introduce other abx if Minocin isn't fully working (ie: tweak the protocol)?
Thanks for any info!

I have only seen him twice, so I dont know that I can be a huge help…
But you asked:
Do you know:
1. What is his standard AP treatment? Is it Minocin M-W-F Bid?
I can only say what he prescribed for me.. and I dont have RA, but Limited Scleroderma.. he started me with 50 mg, once a day, M-W-F. What he would prescribe for RA may or may not be the same.. or even what he would prescribe for another Sclero patient. What I can tell you is this: he is very, very thorough when he speaks with you. he asks a million questions and types the info into the computer, and you get the printout at the end of the visit. he hardly looks at you, but hes listening very intently.
2. Being I am over 6 hours away.. Does he work with you knowing it's far away? IE: Over the phone appts, tweak protocol w/out seeing you, order blood tests and review them via fax, etc?
I wish I had an answer for you on this, but I do not know. What I DO know is that before I ever saw him, I googled him, and on several sites, people had written reviews about him and sang his praises, although they didnt give specifics.
3. I understand he is a rheumy as well? Does he try to push the standard meds?
He is a Rheumy. I understand he is a very, very good Rheumy.. I have heard bits and pieces from others about how he doesnt completely rule out the “standard” meds. He prescribed blood pressure meds for me for my Raynauds.. I dont have any issues w/ my blood pressure, and therefore, I am reluctant to take the BP medication.. when I brought this up to him, he didnt SAY I was being silly, but I sort of got that impression, like “oh, whats the big deal? its only a little BP medication” now of course, when it comes to prescribing more serious drugs like MTX, etc.. I dont know what his attitude would be. again, I know this: he really listens to the patient, and I do not think he treats everyone with a broad brush: I think he really focuses on each individual.
4. Does he introduce other abx if Minocin isn't fully working (ie: tweak the protocol)?
I apologise for not being able to recall where / from who I heard it, but I do recall hearing that he is always willing to “change it up” and tweak things to find the right combo that works for the individual, and hes not one to throw in the towel.
I am sorry I could not be more specific or that I didnt have more answers for you, but again, I am new at this myself. I know that there are a couple of others on this board that also see Dr. W … the one persons user name is Tisch&SEB… although she is new to Dr. W as well, but maybe she can provide some insight.
I will say this: do not expect a “warm and fuzzy” doc.. I mean, hes not rude, but he definitely wont give you the feeling that you have just had a cup of tea while snuggling under your favorite blanket! he is very business like.. not much for chit chat.. he gets in there, asks questions, types away on the computer, and gets on with it.. but in the end, as long as he knows that he is doing, thats all that matters to me!! ( and I think he has a really helpful staff.. very nice, easy to work with, etc. )
If I ever get any new insights into Dr. W, I will definitely post about it.
I wish you all the best!

Mr Perfect went to him – he's the one I complained about, but always ended with being grateful that at least he prescribes the minocin.
Standard is MWF bid
Doesn't do anything over the phone.
Does give you a standing order for tests- many of which I considered a waste of money and proof that he doesn't stay current in the research. On top of which he is the doctor who did not know that the American Laboratory Manual says that a long term or repeat infection will show negative something or other ( I forget) and will show a rising antigen on repeat tests. He kept insisting that the tests showed negative even though Mr Perfect had a rising antigen test result that eventually went off the measurement scale.
Definately takes every opportunity to push standard meds.
Does not offer any other abx- always offers standard meds
Will prescribe other abx if you know what you want and insist.
Better than nothing – not worth going out of your way for if you have someone closer who will rx the minocin.
Mr Perfect says he has “gravatis” and he makes you feel listened too.

The same person also said he never tried to push standard meds with her…

Sounds like the same doctor, same office description, Mr Perfect has nothing but positive to say about him as well. I however don't care about anything except knowledge and results – and this dr pissed me off with failures on both counts – but at least he prescribed the minocin.
If I were still in that area I would go to Dr V. Who worked with Dr Brown and shows up in his video even. Found out about her too late – as we are in Nevada now – but maybe not too late for others.

Thanks!
October 2, 2009 at 2:33 pm #335394lynnie_sydneyParticipantTom – my understanding is that Dr C-V is not a medical doctor, rather a research scientist, a PhD who received her doctorate in micro-biology. Lynnie

We have been to see Dr W once so far and had started AP already through our PCP. My impression is that he uses AP as part of his “bag of tricks”, but is not opposed to using more mainstream meds as well. He brought up using MTX as a way to get inflammation (in our case, muscle) under control so that I believe the antibiotics can be more effective. He seemed familiar with taking AP to the next level (adding Zithro etc) and to me looked like he was willing to use whatever it takes to deal with the problem, and that it is not political or controversial. I liked the fact the he ordered a lot of routine, thorough bloodwork as that has been missing for us along the way these past two years.
I agree with Connie that it is not a warm and fuzzy doctor experience, but I realized after reviewing the notes that he gave us a copy of that he had been listening intently. The fact that he is typing into a computer for most of the appt may give you the wrong impression. Also, if you subscribe to the rheumatic.org posts, you will see that he gets rave reviews over there and I believe there are a few examples of him working with people over the phone/long distance.
We have our next appt with him in several weeks and are anxious to review some of the bloodwork he ordered.
Good luck with your decision!Tisch
