Has anyone with SD had Iron absorbtion problems leading to anemia? My doctor is prescribing Iron IV (one time) and I'd like to know if anyone has had this, what precautions, and if it helped.
Deb-AZ,
I've read cautions about those of us with immune illnesses taking iron in supplements. I'd like for you to read such as this for yourself, but will have to get back with you with specific links, etc. Maybe others will post on this subject, too.
It has been written that the infectious organisms cause this type of anemia, as they feed on our iron; and, further, this was said to be the cause of the anemia. After being on AP for a while, the condition is said to usually gradually improve.
If you go to http://www.rheumatic.org and click on “Frequently Asked Questions” , this problem is probably addressed in this paper.
Also, there are some products from the health store that (without containing iron supplements) addresses the anemia problem pretty well. Will also see if I can find particulars on this and edit and post them.
Edit: This is what I found. Suggest the following would be good for all APers to know about — if not for ourselves, for others that may need to know it.
Deb-AZ, you might want to have your doctor read this article by Dr. Galland (who is highly respected and credentialed):

Dangers of Iron Supplements by Leo Galland, MD, FACN

The following are two healthstore products that have been shown to be helpful for those with anemia.

Best to you,
