    New avenues of research are pointing to an allergic reaction to inflammatory cytokines as a cause of major depression. Not only this, that the inflammation and release of cytokines in all likelihood has an infectious cause.

    How is it that we rheumatic patients, here, have known by direct experience that the depression associated with rheumatic disease is exacerbated by inflammatory flares and that Brown knew decades ago that rheumatic diseases had a “bacterial allergy” infectious component?

    Hi Maz;
    This is the exact same result that researchers here are finding.As you likely know Bell had a “Let’s Talk” day last week to raise money for mental disease research, they give 5 cents for every phone call,tweet,email etc and this year raised over 5 million$.For the best part of 2 days that is the big news on the radio and T.V,Canada A.M. did a whole show on it as well As The Social,Marylin and a dozen other programs.This is to make people aware of mental diseases,they interview many celebs,athletes and ordinary people as well as the scientists behind the research.Howie Mandel did a whole show as well as Clara Huges( olympic speed skater and biker) and Karen Magnusen(figure skater)
    Most work is being done in Montreal and B.C. and the general consencus is INFLAMATION and they are now trying to figure out what is causing it.One really interesting thing they found using mice is that if deprived of enough good gut flora they go into depression in a few days and pop out of it after a couple more on probiotics.They are almost sure that gut health are behind mental diseases .They are laying the blame for this squarely at the foot of our diet and stress….sound familiar?

    Hi Maz, many neuropsychiatric illness, not only depression, but ADH, autism, schizophrenia, even epilepsy etc. (Your mood also) are secondary to wellness (or not) of your gut. Or better, they depends on gut-microbiome and gut+human-microbiome depends on food. The worst food for your brain are grains. Do You have read “Grain Brain” of D. Perlmutter: Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar are Your Brain’s Silent Killers.
    I have observed people affected of coeliac disease and contemporaneously depressed: after diet without grains cured of coeliac disease and depression.
    Food = gut-microbiome = inflammation status (+ or -)
    In other words: food = Inflammation status (+ or -) + genetics = expression of all typology of chronic inflammatory (autoimmune included, neuropsychiatric included etc.) illness.
    Cari saluti Pierluigi

    Hi Pierluigi,

    So nice to see you posting here and thank you for your message – a very wise statement you made above! 🙂

    So many of us here would agree with your remarks and have come to understand that diet definitely influences how we feel and that certain foods feed the less friendly bugs in our guts, exacerbate leaky gut, and increase inflammation throughout the body. Diet is a key factor in the healing process, without doubt.

    One of the drawbacks of modern medicine is that tunnel vision has occurred wherein specialties (gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology, neurology, dermatology, etc.) put the focus of their research within narrow fields and the holistic view has been lost. Organ systems don’t work in isolation, but in harmony, like a finely tuned orchestra….yet also within the wider environment of the organism. Nothing in this universe works in isolation and this is true for the human body, too.

    Hoping you and yours are well!

    [A search I did under “General Discussion” above also turned up a more recent, new Roadback post, dated Feb 10 2015, pertaining to this subject and Dr. Perlmutter
