    I am new to the discussion board but have been taking minocycline for a little over a year now. I have been doing amazing but having a few side effects. I am bruising (most on my legs) and toe nails look like I dropped a heavy object on them. I am going to the Rhuemy tomorrow and trying to figure out what I need to do. I dont want to come off of the antibiotics because I am worried about having a flare. I have Dermatomyositis. This treatment is the only thing that has worked for me. Have any of you had this problem ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !

    Hi Terri;
    This is a very common ocurence.Kind of a trade off,bruising in exchange for feeling better.Some people find that extra vitamin C helps.My blue patches only lightened when I could reduce my mino to 100mg every other day.It took over a year to lighten up somewhat.I am just glad I am feeling great.

    I just wanted to make sure I did not need to worry about any long term side effects. I would much rather be feeling better than having a flare. I backed off of the Minocycline, down to 100mg M-W-F and started showing signs of the DM returning. I have been free of symptoms for several months now. Just wasnt sure if I should change to Doxy or something else. Thanks for responding.

    welcome to the Road Back Forum terrildavis! The grey/blue effect is not actually bruising but rather hyperpigmentation, most likely due to a build up of iron under the skin due to the chelating effects of mino (and all the tetras in fact). If you go to the top of the Discussion Forum front page where topics are listed and type in “hyperpigmentation” alot of posts on this subject will come up. Lynnie

    I also have Dermatomyositis and was just seen at the Univ of Iowa Derm clinic on Tuesday. I asked about the bruising on my lower extremities and she said it was from the Mino. She said it really wasn’t anything to worry about.
