    Hello,

I am currently considering orthdontic treatment and wanted to check if anybody has had braces while they were under treatment esp so with RA. Also, I would so appreciate if you would be willing to share any thoughts or ideas even if you don’t have experience. 🙂

    Thanks for your time!

    I wish I had some answers, but I don’t.
I went to my dentist last month for a cleaning and he told me he could see a change in my saliva.
    I also have ra.
He said people with ra have a very high risk of getting periodontal disease.
    I didn’t ask any questions.
Maybe talk to your dentist about this.

    Patty 🙂

    Hi Mimi
I have Sd and got braces 6months before I got diagnosed–though I had carpal tunnel and raynaud’s prior that were obviously early signs. If I had known I had SD I probably wouldn’t have gotten braces as I am concerned about the toxic load. I have the Invisalign removable clear orthodontics which is good in one way because I can clean my teeth well (bacteria!) and not, because of the plastic in my mouth. Also have to get numerous impressions done which is not great. However, I am two thirds of the way done and it is paid for so I am carrying on. I used to make jokes about an open casket since I am 55 but I don’t now I have SD 😆
Ruffian made an interesting post a couple of days ago about her son getting terrible cystic acne after his braces were removed so I could only presume they harbour a lot of bacteria in the mouth, which is not good when we already have a bacterial issue. Perhaps being on AP is helpful in this respect. I am on Clindamycin oral once a week so I plan my dental fiddling days to be on that day. So I don’t have any words of wisdom really. You might look into the Invisalign. They are working well and barely visible, though it is ending up taking much longer than they said and that is not pleasing me. Good luck!

I had braces for three years or so before I began having RA symtpoms. I got my braces off a few months after noticing severe joint swelling. I never thought the two were related at all. Braces are usually pretty harmless, and I kept my teeth real clean anyway (only one cavity related to the braces!!!). I wouldn’t be too worried if I were you. I’m sensitive to toxins as well, and I don’t remember anything when I got braces. It was in my pre-RA days, but I’m still living in the same body!! =) If they would hurt my now, I bet I would have realized it then, and I didn’t notice anything bad about them.

Dr Nikolas Hedberg has said that the absolute best mouthwash to get rid of oral bacteria is equal parts of hydrogen peroxide (3% kind you can buy in pharmacy) water and some sea salt. I’d be using this twice daily with anything like braces that could harbor bacteria.

Thank you all for sharing your experience and thoughts! I got mine last week; I wasn’t a candidate for Invisilign but got Damon clear and they barely noticeable! So far so good. Thanks for the encouraging words. And Lynnie – thanks for the mouthwash tip. I will need to do everything to keep my mouth as clean as possible.

There is a mouth rinse called Peroxyl that is a 1.5% hydrogen peroxide rinse

Ruffian, you’d be better making up your own – as outlined above – with a higher percentage of Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and sea salt. Will give him a better result. You can read about this on Dr Hedberg’s site.

Mini – I’m a 48 year old guy who got braces just prior to being diagnosed with AS. I too opted for the Damon brackets, as Invisalign would have taken longer than I wanted. The Damons are well worth the extra cost. Amazingly fast. I wore mine for about 16 months and am very happy with the results. I primarily needed to change my bite, which was accomplished, and I got pretty front teeth to boot!

You will be glad you did it and I don’t even remember much about wearing them. It will be over before you know it.

    Good luck!
    Michael
