I got an appt with Dr. T….finally! I've had RA for 17 years…some of those years I was in remission (on no meds) some in the beginning were very bad. Now…just constant but not that bad. In addition to predinisone and celebrex, My Dr of 17 years put me on Doxy 20mg every day but refused to increase the dosage or give me Minocin.:headbang:
So I went to see another doc who said my xrays were horrible… and even though my labs are not so bad Sed 23, CRP 3.3, RF 38 he wanted to put me on Enbrel and Methotrexate because my hands were awful. I am floored because Note that I've not had an xray in 17 years and I can open anything with my hands and my fingers are perfectly straight…I'm dumbfounded. Yes, they are not what they used to be, but I didn't think they were so bad…He said he wanted to give me the big guns on the xrays alone…forget the blood work…So I fired him too.:headbang:
Off to see Dr. T. I hope he doesn't tell me awful things. I hope he allows me to take a real dosage of Minocin. I hope he is wonderful and smart and caring.
I'm scared that I'm putting my trust in a therapy that 2 docs say is stupid. But I'm thinking that someone with the credentials of Dr. T to know better…Thank you for listening…thank you for letting me share my path with you…
May we all be well.

In His first appointment, he will probably prescribe minocin 100mg twice daily. This is a good way to start. I hope you are not disappointed. Some people swear by him. I definitely don'tApril 11, 2008 at 1:52 pm #311280whaleharborKeymasterHi Terri and Superperro.
I appreciate the support you both have given me. I feel better (mentally) today. I actually have to wait a while for my appt…but heck, I've waited 17 *(&^@ years with this…so what's another month or two, right?
As for the Min 100mg 2 per day…that would be a dream for me. I actually hope that is exactly what he will do. I remember taking tetracycline for years as a teenager for acne (many, many moons ago) with no adverse side effects. Perhaps that was why my “growing pains” stopped.
My frustration that I share with you all is that this isn't more mainstream. That doctors don't know about this or consider this as alternative course of action. Every med has it's place right? Well that includes Min too doesn't it? Preaching to the choir, I know. I'm off my soapbox now.
And to those that might be helped….check out Dr. Sears and the Zone Diet and the AntiInflammation Zone book that he has written. I've found it extremely useful personally. It doesn't control it 100% but it has helped…especially the fish oil, I think….but consider it with your doctor for yourself.

(1)If you start the minocin 100mg twice daily, and it hurts too much, reduce the dose and start pulsing. Work your way up to a higher dose slowly.
(2)If after 4 months, the minocin is not working, Dr.T will start twisting your arm to take Methotraxate or Arava. I would advice you not to. Read

In particular,
13. I HAVE BEEN ON 100 MG. OF MINOCYCLINE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY FOR SIX MONTHS AND HAVE SEEN NO RESPONSE. CAN I STILL EXPECT IMPROVEMENT?April 12, 2008 at 8:11 pm #311282whaleharborKeymasterSuperperro, thank you for your words of wisdom. I will keep that in mind and stand my ground. I appreciate your experience…thank you!
I am guessing this is why you said you were not a fan and are (likely) seeing someone else.

April 13, 2008 at 1:46 pm #311283JeffNParticipantWhaleharbor – I'm on the 100 mg of mino (generic) twice a day seven days a week, This program is working very well in my case. Dr T is also my AP doc, I see him every six months, I never had a four month visit. RA is probaly different though. It may not work for everyone but it is probably a good place to start particularly if you live in this area. Best of luck, I was very excited to finally be on a course of treatment for my SD, my previous doc had me in a wait and see mode. I mentally really needed to be doing SOMETHING for my SD.
