Pinch me and wake me up!  I have been using my infrared sauna for a few weeks now.  After two weeks I actually started to sweat which was a major step for me.  Once I started to sweat my body temperature changed.  I am no longer cold and have had no issues with my Raynaud's!  I no longer take Motrin, which I was taking every day for my joint aches but no longer have achy joints.  I was taking 90 mg of Nifedipine and am completely off of it now.  By stopping the Nifedipine the swelling in my legs went away (not 100 yet, but close).  Had I know that a sauna could help this much I would have bought it sooner.  The moral of the story is–BUY A INFRARED SAUNA.    Thanks to all would gave me info on the sauna.  JoAnn

    JoAnn,

I am so happy that you posted and so happy that you're getting good results.  I was so excited because the same happened to me and I was worried I was over-hyping the sauna not knowing if others would benefit as much.  Can you believe the Raynaud's?  I still get some color change, but not the stinging or spasming ~ just great!

Which type of sauna did you buy?

How crazy that we are embracing sweating, huh?

Kim, First, thanks for all your help with my decision on the infrared spa.  I got a portable spa that closes up like a suitcase so we can take it to our house in New York State.  Although I find it extremely boring, it is amazing what a difference it makes!!  I am so excited.  I understand you when you say you wondered if you were over-hyping but it works!!  I finally feel semi-normal!!

I have talked to my hubby and he agrees I should get the sauna. So in July, when I get a back payment, I will get the sauna and start using it right away. I want to get better by the end of August when I go on a trip for two weeks.

    JoAnn,

I was Rx'd Nifedipine after being Dx'd with SD, but it made my legs swell at just 25mg.  I had similar reactions when I tried Cialis (taking for my fingertip problems, Raynauds, and as a preventative for PAH). Several others reported the edema side effect of Nifedipine.

For the last 1 1/2 months I have been taking 20mg 3X/day Lumbrokinase (an enzyme for circulation and thick blood) and I have had tremendous improvement.

By the way, as you may have seen, Cialis (Tilandafil) at 40 mg /day has just been approved by the FDA for PHA.  Link here:

But who needs more meds if the sauna is working!  P.S., I try to go in my club's sauna every day.

Kim does it take about 2 weeks of treatment in the sauna before you notice a difference, and how long does eveyone stay in the sauna, I have purchased a portable one and have been able to stay in it for 20 minutes then I feel weak and have to get out of it, I did not go in it every day just every other day and I have only had it for about 10 days, I am hoping to increase my time a little bit each time I use it and try to work up to at least 1/2 hour or more.

Would someone who's on dialysis be able to use this sauna? I'm thinking it would really help my mom out! Silly question maybe but I don't want to do anything that might cause more issues for her.   Thanks!

You guys are right to be concerned.  There is powerful detox occuring plus depletion of minerals which need to be replaced.

My doctor would not even let me use a FIR sauna (or any other kind) for the first year of treatment.  She said I was too toxic and it could put me in the hospital or psych ward.

She only just let me start using one and she restricted me to just 15 mins once a week.  Ok, ok.  Yes, I am cheating.  I love the sauna and how it makes me feel.  I am up to 20 mins twice a week.  😕

    Hey DAR,

You do have to build up your tolerance to the sauna, probably because you don't sweat well in the beginning.  I bought mine in the winter so I didn't mind getting heated up often and I used it almost daily.  I'd say if you're finding it hard to take to try and stay in until you get a rolling sweat going, otherwise what's the point?  I preheat mine to 130 degrees and stay in for 40 minutes, but I've worked up to that.  I'm really ready to get out after that.

    Michelle,

I really don't know if it would be OK for your mother to use a sauna while on dialysis so you'd have to ask her doctor.  It would be nice if she could because it really helps with SD.

    Take care…..kim

Michelle, I was thinking of you and your Mom as I came across an article on the renal protective properties of the tetracyclines the other day. I can't for the life of me find the article again, but did a search on the key words, “Renal protective properties of tetracyclines,” and came across this animal study. It may or may not be relevant in your Mom's case, but thought to send it to you, anyway:

Minocycline inhibits apoptosis and inflammation in a rat model of ischemic renal injury

I'm sure a more in-depth study would pull up more for you, if interested in searching further. Any further along in getting your Mom started on AP?

    Peace, Maz

    Maz,

Thank you for thinking about us!  I will definitely read this article.

Yes, she started taking 50mg minocycline a day 3 weeks ago.  I also have her on Pre/Pro Biotics and stomach enzymes and I believe her gut is getting better.  NO diahrrea recently…Thank you GOD!  We go back to her doctor on July 2 and he'll raise the dose.  I will be talking to him at that time as to why he has not honored my request to consult with Dr. S in Iowa.  We'll see what his response is.  I will email Dr. S myself or just take her for a second opinion to Dalton, GA where the other Dr. S is.  These silly doctors – once again, time to take matters into my own hands!  😛  Everything is so different for people who's kindey's have failed.  I have to make sure we're on the right path (I know we are) and want to treat as aggressively as possible though givinen her condition.

She's been having more good days than bad!  I don't think we're really seeing huge amounts of progress yet but she looks better to me and her stomach issues are better.  Little by little – We are patient!

Michelle, sounds like you're really staying on top of things for your Mom! She's so blessed to have you as her daughter. Mind you, she must be a pretty special Mom that you are acting so vigilantly on her behalf. 😉 Sounds like you have a very good plan in place to get the second opinions of one or the other Dr S's.

What is so terrific is that your Mom's gut seems to be responding already! This is really good news!! It is much more complicated for people with kidney failure, but getting everything else controlled is a worthy goal to help her fight the good fight. And, it's completely understandable you want to treat as aggressively as possible, but good to be taking things slowly till you have some expert input from one of the experienced AP docs.

Please give best wishes to your Mom and tell her we're rooting for her! If she's having some better days just three weeks in, this is quite an achievement, so tell her not to give up and to keep the faith.

    Peace, Maz

I used mine 7 days straight, going from 20 minutes up to 45.  Day 7 is when I broke a sweat at about 35 minutes.  Now I break a sweat after 7 or 8 minutes.  Once I break a sweat I only stay in for 20 to 25 minutes.  If I use the sauna 3 to 4 times a week, that is enough for me.  I had no ill effects from the heat, only positive results, thank God.  I did get clearance from my internal medical doc and my dermatologist before I purchased it.  The dermatologist researched it and claims that the theory is the sauna improves skin thickening by heating the skin and causing increased blood flow and an increase in the activity of enzymes in the skin that break down the thickened collagen.   I must admit it is very boring but since it helps I will just be bored.  JoAnn
