Just got all sorts of bloodwork done. I’m waiting to hear from my doctor by the IgM is low. 27…reference is 50 to 300.

    Any ideas? Scared….freaking out.

Minocycline 100mg every other day with food...lots of food: Zydus brand. Celecoxib 200mg twice per day: Greenstone brand.

    Hi Whaleharbor,

Try not to be worried – easy to say, I know, but labs can vary between blood draws and between labs.

Minocycline was shown to lower IgM rheumatoid factor (see study following) – the autoantibody specific to RA, other autoimmune diseases and even some infections – but I’m unsure if it would lower IgM antibody counts in general. For the most part, folks here have reported fewer colds, etc., while taking it, which might suggest it’s immune-supportive effects.

Inflammatory and immunological parameters of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with minocycline

Just a few vague fellow patient ideas to ask your doc, but some infections may be immune-suppressive, reducing immune function and ability to respond to infections (but so can things like anemia or hypothyroidism).

Do you know why your doc ordered IgM? Are getting more infections lately?

No more infections at all. It’s a new doctor. He ordered IgM, IgA and IgG. Only IgM was low…all else normal. He did a huge workup…everything was excellent. Only thing out of line was vitamin d (a little low)…crp was just over the line…it’s always that way for me. Sed rate…perfection…all other blood counts etc…perfect.

I spoke with him and he said that the IgM in particular in light of all of the other bloodwork being so good was insignificant and likely transient. So I guess I feel better but then “Dr. Google” and you know…I get scared all over again.

Thank you for answering Maz. I’ll look at your link.

That’s great news, Whaleharbor! Weird blips like this can happen (transient), as you say, and, unless there is a distinct trend over time and symptoms evolve, prob nothing to get concerned about. 😀 Btw, way to get your last flare under control!!!

A change in generic minocycline to Zydus brand and time is what made the difference in the flare. Thank you for your well wishes. I believe it was COVID that caused the flare. New rheumy suspects so as well. He doesn’t believe in mino but agrees to keep me on it because “it works for you.” I miss my old now retired rheumy…but alas… Thank you as always Maz for all you do for all of us.

    Hi Whaleharbor,

Only IgM was low…all else normal.

You may want to consider taking a product containing colostrum or Transfer Factor (a highly purified form of colostrum). These have an immunomodulatory effect, so there is a possibility that this could be helpful. I personally take Transfer Factor. It seems to have a normalizing effect on my immune system, pushing it into a more balanced state.

He did a huge workup…everything was excellent. Only thing out of line was vitamin d (a little low)

How low is “a little low”?
