Recent Mycoplasma Research

1.Mycoplasma in blood of Ra pts'99
Mycoplasma infections found in blood of RA patients - 6/99

Another study searching for the elusive mycoplasma in rheumatoid arthritis was published this June in the British journal, Rheumatology, by rheurnatologist A. Robert Franco and Garth Nicholson (Gulf War Illness researcher), using PCR testing which identifies an organism by its unique DNA fingerprint.

If a positive result was seen, the most common strains were tested to obtain a specific strain identification. Tested were:

M. fermentans
M. hominis
M. pneumoniae
M. penetrans

Out of 28 patients tested, 8 tested positive for M. fermentans, 5 for M. pneumoniae, 6 for M. hominis and I for M. penetrans. More than one species of mycoplasma was found in 36% of patients, with all being a combination of M. fermentans plus one of the other strains.

The incidence of mycoplasma infection was similar in men and women. 53.6% of patients tested positive for mycoplasma presence in blood, 46.4% tested negative. The difference between patients and controls was significant.
