Very worth reading this Huff Post article and watching the YouTube in it. When looking at the bar charts for cases of Lyme disease in the US, also worth bearing in mind that these are “reported” cases to the CDC. Many states stopped reporting cases a very long time ago and it’s under-reported in states where it’s under-recognized, patients don’t go to their docs as they never see a tick or rash, or there is a failure to report it. Estimates are that it’s likely 10 times higher or more, as lots of people walk around with tickborne infections and may never realize.

What the Media Don’t Tell You About Lyme Disease (But Should)

Some celebrity casualties of Lyme in addition to Yolanda Foster and her kids, Have been Avril Lavigne, Ashley Olsen, Alec Baldwin, Christie Brinkley, Ben Stiller, Michael J. Fox, Daryl Hall….and others. New to the ranks are Shania Twain (Lyme-induced Dysphonia) and Kris Kristopherson (Lyme-induced dementia). Lyme doesn’t discriminate and rheumatic patients are at heightened risk for worsening disease, if undiagnosed, especially if on immune-suppressive therapies, so please take care out there – it’s a tick-infested jungle!

A friend recently told me of a clever eco-friendly way to reduce the risks of ticks attaching to the mice in her yard. She soaks cotton balls in permethrin and puts the cotton balls in small jars in discrete places in her yard…by the wood pile, in corners, under leafy vegetation, etc. Mice love to build nests with cotton wool and the permethrin prevents ticks from latching onto the diseased mice. Another way is to spread lime all around the borders of your yard, because ticks won’t cross lime….deer and rodents do, of course, but it might help.
