I think the family may have been from Canberra (which is in the Australian Capital Territory) but the tick bite was while she was in the Northern Beaches of Sydney (where I live) – which is known as one of the worst areas for Paralysis Ticks in New South Wales. It is also right at the heart of the development of the life-threatening allergy to red meat from tick bites (this is now bigger than allergic reactions to bee stings in Australia and can build up over years before it expresses itself in an anaphylactic response).

Interestingly, the red meat allergy is derived from a bite from the same Paralysis Tick (Ixodes holocyclus) which kills dogs and cats in a few days if not treated (this tick is not one that’s found in North America).

    Be well! Lynnie
